An Audiovisual Concert Performance with Mark Niskanen and Jani-Matti Salo

Mana Contemporary Chicago is pleased to welcome guest artists Mark Niskanen (piano, found objects, and electronics) and Jani-Matti Salo (light, videos) for this special concert where music, image, and light morph into an organic sensory experience. The piece centers around a dialogue about connection and otherness, involvement and exclusion. The project is supported by The Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Mark Niskanen is a Finnish pianist, composer, and arranger. Intentionally breaking genre barriers, he balances contemporary and experimental music, jazz, and interdisciplinary multimedia work. His performances and compositions have been heard across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Niskanen holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree from Western Michigan University, where he is currently pursuing a Master of Art in Music, focusing on multimedia, composition, and improvisation.

Jani-Matti Salo is a lighting and performance designer (MA) from Helsinki. He works with both local and international performance art and contemporary dance productions. In 2014, Salo received the Säde award for best lighting design in Finland, and the Gold Medal at the Prague Quadrennial 2015 for use of media in performance design. Salo has also created several installations based on lighting and spatial design, which have been shown at f.ex. and The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma. Salo’s designs can be described as ways to create performances as a whole through the means of visual design.

This performance is free and open to the public. For more information visit: www.janimattisalo.com
